Thoughts

I hope my sweet brother doesn't hate me for sharing this, but I think there are many of us (if not ALL of us) who can use this in our daily lives. This came from an email he sent me this morning. This is Elder Maxwell, therefore you might have to read it twice... I know I did.

"I share with you again a simple little insight that may help you at certain junctures in your lives. It is that you must not mistake passing local cloud cover for general darkness. They are very different things, and for us to distinguish local cloud cover, which will soon be blown away, for general darkness is a terrible thing, especially with the restored gospel, which is so full metaphorically of light. We must not be mistaken about this.

I have likewise learned that illness can be a tutoring and sanctifying experience as well as a debilitating thing. There await each of us clusters of circumstances and experiences, and if we see "things as they really are," to use Jacob's felicitous phrase (Jacob 4:13), we'll be able to understand that illnesses may be debilitating but are also very tutoring, and we will be open to what they can convey to us. Such is spiritually very, very important. "
- Neal A. Maxwell of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints devotional address delivered at BYU on 12 January 1999.

My brother.... "We can all learn from this illness that Dad is dealing with; and be tutored and sanctified in our our discipleship! This gives me strength! Jacob 4:13 is one of my favorites! Elder Maxwell quotes it so often, it has such deep meaning.....
Just my thoughts"
Thank you Bro... thank you.
I love you!

I love this post - thank you for sharing it!! There are always lessons. I have been thinking a lot about the ones me and my family are learning - the cliche of everything happening for a reason ..... well I can certainly see the blessings from our trials.

I love Elder Maxwell. Let me introduce myself, I am Letti, I noticed my blog under your links. (mom I'm Hungry) I am so flattered that you would put me on such a beautiful blog. Thanks again and I look forward to getting to know you. I am sorry to hear about your father. But it sounds like you have a truly amazing and close family.

Isn't it funny how you find a quote, like that beautiful one from Brother Maxwell, at just the right moment...when your heart needs to hear words of comfort. That is one of the most beautiful things about faith...it strengthens us in times of hardship...and it helps us know who to thank in times of joy! Thanks for sharing that with us.

You do have a sweet brother. What kind words. I hope you find comfort in them.

Your dad seems like the sweetest man ever. He has given his children his goodness and love and it shows.

Thanks for sharing this. I had a very stressful day and I kept saying, "this is just cloud cover!"

It helped. M

What a great analogy using cloud cover vs. general darkness. This post came at a perfect time as I know of a few people who could benefit from this. Thank you!

I love this. Thank you for sharing it. And thanks to your brother. Think I may just have to print that quote out to refer to often.

I love this so much. It couldn't have been better said. You are a strength in so many ways. I will never look at clouds the same. I will think of you and this. We do learn much through different experiences. And you have learned much. I really connect with you right now. Our dad's going through things, and others that we love. I have really needed that connection too. Thanks.
