Soccer Mom

I have always loved soccer. All 5 of my boys have played. It can be a pretty intense game. Thus far this season Dallin has had a concussion and a broken nose! Yikes!

Yesterday he got a yellow card and had to sit out for a bit. When he went back in, he was going for the ball against the goalie and the goalie hit him in the nose! The coach yelled out, "He owed you one!" Okay. I am pretty sure that Dallin had GOTTEN a card AND sat out. He paid his pretence. NO ONE owed anyone anything! Their stupid immature coach kept yelling at their players to get him. Our coach had me fill out an incident report at the school today. We were told that there would be administrators from both schools when we play this particular team again. Here are a few pics from the game and YES we won! 2-0! HA! (I don't sound a bit "in your face, do I?") I really HAVE mellowed. There was a time when my oldest son was playing that he held me back and I punched him, yeah...

He has some hops, don't ya think?

K, here is the play where he got the yellow card... does it look to you like he deserved it? Looks to me like he is TRYING to MISS the goalie!
So, my question to you is this... Are you competitive? Do you get a little loud at ball games?

I never thought about it until we have started going to college Basketball games. We find ourselves very rowdy and noisy. I actually like it. So I say go for it soccer mom. Remember- pitbulls with lipstick.

I am very competitive! I think I scared my four year old away from soccer. I think soccer was too chaotic for him!

I am with Jan... True story. Our little 8 year old grandson asked me if I came to any of his games if I wouldn't yell so loud. LOL

I guess that is your answer!

He then told me some of the kids didn't have any body there to yell for them and he felt stupid having so many cheering him on. Isn't he sweet?

I probably would have been one of those screaming mothers. But when I was 18 I coached a T-ball team of the cutest little girls on the planet. I had a girl named Brenda who was our catcher. keep in mind these girls were like 6 & 7 years old. Brenda's mom would sit behind home plate and SCREAM at Brenda to get the ball, to hit the ball, and yell at each kid who didn't do what she thought they should...just CONSTANT screaming. I remember one day Brenda running happily across the baseball field just before a game...and she's yelling excitedly...GUESS WHAT COACH...MY MOM CAN'T COME TO THE GAME TODAY!!! The complete joy on her face just floored me. How sad that this little sweet girl was HAPPY her mom couldn't come. It was a great learning experience for an 18 year old. I have never forgotten it. And I kept my cool through every sport all three of my kids played.

Everyone in our family is loud. And when I'm not loud, my kids worry that there is something wrong with me.

Your son was totally wronged

He totally didn't deserve what he got! I'm not loud enough that I embarrass my boys, but I am a mama bear if I think someone has wronged them. No one messes with our boys!

I embarrass my kids all the time and I'm not yelling at them, at least not much, I'm yelling FOR them. A good parent brings the critical commentary on the way home or at the house. A few words at the game are fine if necessary, but it's best to talk about what needs to be done better at home.

I say that because of nikkicrumpet's comment. Wisdom there, for sure, and I completely understand her point and have seen parents ruin sports for their children in just that way. I just don't think that's what Shaila was trying to say.

That said, kids love for their parents to radically support them in their efforts. My son tells about the football team hearing me yelling during game film on Monday. They can hear me above the entire crowd. He doesn't tell it like he's upset; he tells it like he's proud his Mama loved and supported him. And he didn't even want to play football. I made him do it and it's one of his proudest moments. Now. He didn't know it then, but I did. He's 23, but he still thanks me for it.

Even as he's getting insane at his little brother's basketball game because some kid just threw our baby into the wall, it's about supporting the kiddies. They notice and they appreciate it and they know who had their back.

It makes them trust us to give advice and counsel on everything else because as parents, we tell the truth. Even if it isn't pleasant truth, it's truth and they can accept that.

On a lighter note, it's also because Shaila is a Texan. We are serious about our sports, and rightly so. Sports can teach many of the most important lessons in life if you pay attention.

I'm right there with ya, Shaila! I'm intense about the kiddies sports. Not because I think they're going to be Jerry Rice or Michael Jordan, but because the lessons learned while playing sports are lessons that need to be learned. Fair play. Objective rules. There is no free lunch. No whining because life isn't fair. Grit your teeth and make it work, no, go ahead and be a winner. Be classy when those around you show none.

Love ya!
Lana

OMG... YES,,, SOFTBALL is my game. I played softball in my youth and my Dad was my coach... So of course my girls play.. We just finished with JR high school 7th and 8th grade teams. That was instense. I'm at the end of my seat. Ashlee catches and she controls the entire game trying to make the opposite teams not to steal the bases.. She intimidates them. I love it.. We ar enow starting up club ball and Mike and I are the Division managers for the senior teams.. We are excited to be apart of that. All three of our girls play. They have played for 8 years now...

SOFTBALL IS A THINKING SPORT!

OMG...you are so like the rest of the family. I don't know much about socker because it is not a "Texas" game but if you say so I believe. LOL You are a picture taking dude. I forgot my camera last weekend when we had Christmas and I haven't gotten one picture from the girls. You must have gotten that from the other side. LOL I know you are proud of your boys and you should be. How fun. I love sports! Aunt Willie

As a kid & teenager I was so competitive. Then I played on a co-ed softball team & they were HORRIBLE. They got in fights called the ump bad names & I saw how bad it makes you look. Then I coached YW sports for about 10 yrs & I learned that it didn't matter how well you did. Everyone deserved a chance to play & feel part of the team. Some of the leaders would yell at me for calls I made or for making them play all their players & not their star players. But you know when it comes to church sports. Non active & non members come a lot & these leaders where showing them by their actions that they did love them & care about them. They only cared about winning.
Ok- Long story. But I think when my kids get into sports I will have to be held back too. And I would of probably been in that other coach's face myself.
There's a difference in being a hot head & mean or having a good reason. Like you did...

I meant that the leaders were showing the girls that they DIDN'T love them...
